Turkey and Russia are trying to mend their complicated ties amid the Ukraine standoff. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone conversation on January 2. Putin and Erdogan discussed bilateral ties and global issues. The call comes amid Russia’s tense standoff with the West which accuses Moscow of planning an invasion of Ukraine. The two leaders discussed Russia’s demand for a legally binding agreement over NATO’s expansion eastwards.
