US President Joe Biden announced the first tranche of sanctions against Russia. Biden also called Moscow’s Donass move the “beginning of a Russian invasion”. Biden condemned Putin’s decision to recognise the independence of Luhansk and Donetsk and the deployment of Russian troops. Biden’s announcement was followed by sanctions from other democracies like Canada, Australia & Japan. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky is calling up reservists for a special period – but ruled out general mobilisation. Meanwhile, US president Biden said that he has authorised additional movement of US forces to allies in Eastern Europe.
