Rollo The Viking: Conqueror Of Normandy Through Blood And Steel

History Documentaries

Rollo the Walker sought independence from King Harald I of Norway and set sail to raid Scotland, England, Flanders, and France during his pirating expeditions. In the early 10th century, Rollo and his Danish army attacked France and established themselves along the Seine River. Charles III the Simple of France, held off Rollo’s siege of Paris and eventually defeated him near Chartres; they negotiated the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte. This treaty granted Rollo control over part of Neustria, which became known as Normandy, in exchange for his agreement to end his acts of brigandage.
