The German occupation of Yugoslav Macedonia started as soon as the Bulgarian occupation ended when in September 1944 Bulgaria switched sides. The Germans now installed a puppet government named: Independent Macedonia. The hoped for the help of Ivan Mikhailov and his movement: IMRO (Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization). Earlier the Anti-fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM) proclaimed an independent Macedonian state. Eventually, the Yugoslav partisans took over the country.
