While Adolph Hitler was busy getting the German war machine rolling, the Soviet Union was in dire need of a tough and reliable anti-tank aircraft. In 1938 an outright request came down to produce such an aircraft and Sergi V. Ilyushin of the Soviet Central Design Bureau came up with a two-seat prototype designated TsKB-55, which first flew on October 2, 1939 and would later become known as the Il-2.
