Martin Sommer, a son of a farmer, was born on the 8th of February 1915 in Schkölen, then part of the German Empire. In 1931 Sommer joined the Nazi Party and 2 years later in 1933 he joined the SS. Soon after their assumption of power in January 1933, Nazi leaders began to make good on their pledge to persecute German Jews.
