Heracles (Hercules) was a mythological demi-God in Ancient Greece, who had inadvertently killed his family while under a magical spell. To expiate his sins, he was required to perform 12 tasks, chosen by his jealous cousin, the king of Tyrins. The impossible nature of these challenges, and fortitude with which Heracles undertook them gained him honour among the Gods of Olympus, as well as Immortality – not least for the popularity of the story of his 12 Labours.
