King Alfred of Wessex faced a crisis in 878 AD when a mounted force of Danes crossed into Wessex, catching him defenseless while his army had been disbanded. Despite the initial defeat, King Alfred was not finished. Alfred vowed to return victorious, earning the nickname “Alfred the Great” for his qualities of restraint, loyalty, generosity, chastity, and continence.
