After WW2, rumors circulated about Nazis dumping gold in Lake Toplitz, Austria, a remote, deep lake used by Nazis as a dumping site for stolen treasures. In 1959, a German journalist Wolfgang Lühr uncovered boxes of counterfeit British pound notes at the Austrian lake. Nazis used Operation Bernhard, led by SS officer Bernhard Krüger, to forge millions of pounds in an attempt to destabilize the British economy. But did the gold actually exist or was it just a myth?
