The Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt to assassinate King James I of England and VI of Scotland and blow up the House of Lords in London on November 5, 1605. A group of English Catholics, led by Robert Catesby and including notable figures like Guy Fawkes, planned to kill the king and other Protestant leaders in order to end persecution against Catholics and replace the Protestant monarchy with a Catholic ruler. The failed plot is commemorated annually in Britain on November 5th, with bonfires and symbolic effigies of Guy Fawkes.
