Task Force 77, a formidable fleet of four American aircraft carriers, was poised to strike. The USS Philippine Sea, already in position, was soon joined by the USS Princeton, USS Boxer, and finally, the USS Bon Homme Richard, sailing from Yokosuka, Japan, to bolster the force.
