Excerpts: Church Excesses and the rise of Reformist Preachers in the 14th Century

History Documentaries

The Rise of Reformist Preachers during the 14th Century began as a direct result of ongoing war, famine, Church degeneracy and later, the Black Death sweeping through Europe in an apocalyptic experience that left many intellectuals despairing that it was the end of the world. Many viewed the abuse of power and privilege of the church (and the papal schism) as being directly responsible, so unsurprisingly, a number of academics and theologians began calling out the clergy for straying from their rightful path. Chief among these early reformist preachers was John Wycliffe and his Bohemian protégé, Jan Hus (John Huss).
