During World War II, Nazi U-boats, led by Admiral Karl Dönitz, posed a significant threat to Allied shipping, bringing Britain close to starvation by sinking merchant ships. Dönitz developed the wolfpack strategy, coordinating U-boats to attack Allied convoys collectively. His tactics initially led to significant Allied losses. As Allied convoys became better protected, Dönitz ordered U-boats to target escorts first, a desperate shift in strategy that ultimately failed to reverse the tide of the war. By D-Day, Allied dominance over the Atlantic was established. Dönitz’s U-boat fleet was severely diminished, marking the decline of Germany’s naval threat.
